In the United States, the standard tip at a restaurant is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 20-25% is common. For counter service or takeout, 10-15% is typical. Always tip on the pre-tax amount, not the total after tax.

Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, not the after-tax total. The tax goes to the government, not the server. However, tipping on the full total including tax is also acceptable and makes the math simpler -- either approach is fine.
